Harness racing history will be made Saturday night at the Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs facility in Pennsylvania when all 12 Breeders Crown championship races will be held on the same card for the first time in the series’ 26-year history.
In October of 2011, Woodbine will play host to all 12 Breeders Crown finals.
Saturday’s card carries total Crown purses just over $6 million.
“The buzz generated by having all 12 races at a different and unexpected venue has been enormous,” said Moira Fanning, publicity director for the Breeders Crown. “The wagering on the eliminations (last week) was up 154 per cent on Friday and 188 per cent on Saturday.”
The finals could prove to be an even bigger winner with bettors.
“For the first time in harness racing, Australia and New Zealand are simulcasting the 12 races on Sky Racing and taking wagering through their telephone account betting system,” Crown CEO Tom Charters said.
As usual, Canadians, particularly those from the Guelph region, will figure prominently in the Crown. Of the 105 horses racing in Crown events, 32 are Canadian owned, including a whopping seven horses owned, in part, by John Fielding of Toronto.
