The latest installment from my weekly Guelph Mercury column…

Casie Coleman of Cambridge could end up winning her third O’Brien Award as Canada’s trainer of the year in harness racing. But her achievements extend far beyond the on-track exploits of her 75-horse stable based in Canada at the Classy Lane Training Centre in Puslinch.

Tuesday it was announced Coleman, 29, received her fifth straight nomination as the nation’s top trainer. In 2009, she set personal seasonal bests with 275 wins and over $6.1 million in earnings.

As well, her stellar colt Sportswriter is a virtual lock to win the two-year-old pacing colt of the year award over the other finalist Wellthereyougo. Sportswriter may also be in the running for the overall horse of the year award.

Coleman has been in the news lately for her philanthropy, too.
