Will write-ins win the day?

By Lauren Lee

Will write-ins win the day?

A tip of the cap to Larry Morrison, part-owner of North America Cup champion Up The Credit (above), who looks like a genius after penciling his colt’s name in as a write-in three-year-old selection for the Dream Stable contest.

With Morrison’s write-in bringing in $880,750, Up The Credit is certainly the early clubhouse leader for ‘write-in of the year’ — especially since Morrison was the only Dream Stable manager to select him.

However, many others also took a detour from the beaten path and have seen some handsome returns thus far. For example, three participants wrote-in three-year-old trotter Dejarmbro’s name and have been rewarded with $352,118 in the bank so far after the colt’s recent win in the $500,000 Beal Memorial at Pocono Downs.

In addition, Some Girls Do ($216,599), Big Bad John ($197,568), Beatgoeson Hanover ($178,945), Machal Jackson ($158,470) and Daylon Magician ($111,500) have also proven to be sage picks at this early stage of the game.

Here’s a breakdown of this year’s write-in selections, because, who knows, Morrison might not be the only one in this contest with a wild card up his sleeve.

All of the following received at least one write-in selection:

Manchester Hanover (19 write-ins)

Dream week for Larry Morrison

By Dave Briggs

Dream week for Larry Morrison

It’s definitely Larry Morrison’s week. First, his colt Up The Credit won the $1.5 million Pepsi North America Cup June 18 at Mohawk. Then, because Morrison (above) of Beeton, ON, was the only one of 423 competitors to write in Up The Credit on his Dream Stable form, he leapt into a dominant early lead in the race for the $2,500 first-place prize in the $5,000 contest sponsored by Hanover Shoe Farms.

See standings here.

It doesn’t hurt that Morrison also picked trotting colt Blue Porsche, who is undefeated in 2011 and won the Goodtimes Stakes on NA Cup night.

Sitting second, $327,328 off the pace, is Jim Fielding of Toronto, co-owner of undefeated pacing filly See You At Peelers. Fielding selected the super filly over a group of colts that race for more money as sophomores (though trainer Jimmy Takter has already raced Peelers against the boys and is vowing to do so again, perhaps in the Jug). Fielding also took outstanding sophomore trotting filly Crys Dream, which bodes well for his Dream Stable hopes.

Dream Stable standings will be posted and updated every Monday from now to the end of the year.

Over 400 Canadian Sportsman subscribers are vying for a share of $5,000 (Cdn) in total cash prizes. First place earns $2,500, second is worth $1,250, the stable finishing third earns $600, there’s a $400 prize for fourth and $250 goes to the fifth-place finisher. The stable that has the highest earnings from its yearling selections only (two-year-olds racing in 2011), earns a one-year subscription to The Sportsman.

Rock N Roll Heaven takes Fleet to the top

By Lauren Lee

After stalking the lead for weeks, Harold Fleet has finally earned the top spot in the Dream Stable standings on the strength of Rock N Roll Heaven’s weekend win in the $604,000 Tattersalls Pace at the Red Mile in Lexington, KY. Fleet vaulted by previous leader (Reg and Donna Higgs) with the win and now leads by more than $200,000 as the contest heads down the homestretch.

Rock N Roll Heaven, who has put himself in the catbird seat for the U.S. horse of the year award, was selected by 26 Dream Stable managers at the outset of the contest. Fleet and Brett Romano, who currently sits in third place, are the only two competitors in the top 10 with Rock N Roll Heaven ($1,835,627) on their rosters.

As such, Fleet and Romano may be hard to beat with the Rock N Roll Heaven express showing no signs of slowing down even as the temperature drops and the end of the season draws ever closer. If all goes according to plan over the next few weeks, Rock N Roll Heaven still has both the $350,000 (est.) Progress Pace and the $315,000 (est.) Matron Stakes at Dover Downs on his November schedule — with high hopes of adding to his already substantial 2010 bankroll.

However, all is not yet lost for those within striking distance. There is still plenty of money on the table, especially at Woodbine with the upcoming and lucrative Fall Four stakes — Goldsmith Maid, Governors Cup, Three Diamonds, Valley Victory — to go along with the $2.4 million that will be distributed in the Ontario Sires Stakes Super Finals next month.
